If any popular bookshopchaintorecoffeehousemegaplex has a philosophy section it's usually populated by the unholy trinity of A.C. Graying, Bertrand Russell and Karl Popper. It's normally an even greater let down as I will probably have had to climb several hundred flights of stairs on my way to the hidden tower of the philosophy section, pushed into the dark corner of the top floor next to the books on magic and other esoteric interests. I get tetchy when I see books with the title '[popular culture TV program or film] and philosophy', next to Nietzsche. The affect is especially strong when I've come down from the peak and waiting for me at the bottom, standing smugly by the door, is a large display of books by Dan Brown and Eckhart Tolle. Maybe, someone's trying to tell me something.
